I have been on a Nordic mystery and thriller kick lately, so when I heard about FAITHLESS by Kjell Ola Dahl, I was really excited have the chance to read it. The book is a slow-burning mystery that concentrates heavily on police procedure. In fact, it is the investigation aspects and the way that the author reveals the case to the reader that hooked me the most. The writing was not only smart and quit-witted, but the skill and development of the mystery was truly masterful.

Since I have never read anything by this author before, this is the first time I have been introduced to Inspector Frank Frølich, his colleague Gunnarstranda, Lena Stigersand, and the others in this book. Their personalities and quirks at times added to the lighter moments within this dark and weighty investigation. By mixing of the chilling crime with an occasional quip, the story came across as more real to me. It added the balance that I was craving as I was heading into deeper and deeper into the investigation of the murders. The writing was not only smart and quit-witted, but the skill and development of the mystery was truly masterful.

All in all, I completely enjoyed my first Kjell Ola Dahl novel. I cannot wait to read more.

Series Note: I will mention that this book is technically part of a series. However, I have never read anything by the author previously and has no issue following along.

Thank you to Orenda Books giving me a copy of FAITHLESS in exchange for my honest review.

Plot Summary:

Oslo detectives Gunnarstranda and Frølich are back and this time, it’s personal… When the body of a woman turns up in a dumpster, scalded and wrapped in plastic, Inspector Frank Frølich is shocked to discover that he knows her and their recent meetings may hold the clue to her murder. As he ponders the tragic events surrounding her death, Frølich’s colleague Gunnarstranda investigates a disturbingly similar cold case involving the murder of a young girl in northern Norway and Frølich is forced to look into his own past to find the answers – and the killer – before he strikes again.
