Dr. Genevieve Summerford Mystery series, Book 1
☕ ☕ ☕ ☕
A Deadly Affection is a intelligent, well crafted, and absorbing mystery which exposes long hidden secrets and lies all the while calling upon the richness of New York City at the turn-of-the-century.
We open our story with psychiatrist, Dr. Genevieve Summerford. Not only is she constantly having to prove herself because she is a woman, but because the technique that she is using is new. The doctor has recently decided to work with a group of women struggling with depression and other ailments. Her approach has not been tested widely, but Genevieve is determined. However, it is not until one of her patients is involved in a murder that things start to get a bit more interesting. Throughout the book Genevieve will try to prove the innocence of a woman that the police are ready to lock up and throw away the key. It is because her investigation that secrets, lies, and the consequences of actions long ago will come to light. Will she be able to save her patient or is the truth much more involved than what was initially believed?
Okay, so I love historical mysteries. Better yet…I love historical mysteries that transport you to the time that the story is taking place. A Deadly Affection is one of those books. Through brilliant writing, completely relatable characters, and a fair amount of intrigue, this book is one of my favorites of the year. The way that the story unravels will keep you guessing until the very end. I am not easily surprised with an ending, but this one took some turns that I didn’t see coming.
I cannot wait to see what mysteries Dr. Genevieve Summerford uncovers next.

"Do no harm" is easier said than done...
Dr. Genevieve Summerford prides herself on her ability as a psychiatrist to understand the inner workings of the human mind. But when one of her patients is arrested for murder-a murder Genevieve fears she may have unwittingly provoked-she begins to doubt her training and intuition. Unable to believe that her patient could have committed the gruesome crime, Genevieve seeks out answers, desperate to clear the woman's name-and her own.
Over the course of her investigation, Genevieve uncovers a dark secret-one that could, should Genevieve choose to reveal it, bring down catastrophe on those she cares most about. But, should she let it lie, it will almost certainly send her patient to the electric chair. Steeped in the gritty atmosphere of turn-of-the-century New York City, A Deadly Affection is a riveting debut mystery and the first in an exciting new series featuring Dr. Genevieve Summerford.
