My Highly Caffeinated Thought: A dark and action-packed mix of folklore and fantasy.
BEASTS MADE OF NIGHT is a book that I will not soon forget. From the beginning, I was instantly pulled into the richly described world of magic that Onyebuchi has gifted his readers. Through what can only be described as a masterful ability to tell a story, the author gives Taj life. The struggles, peril, and choices Taj must face keep the suspense and action going for most of the novel. This story is quite the ride.
Even though the tale is fast-paced and doesn't shy away from the high energy surrounding sin-eating or a fight, what stood out for me was the intense sense of humanity and the need for connection between the characters. Each moment that the author gave us where the characters were able to truly be themselves and reflect on their lives is a gift. I know that many will read the book for the magic, the thrills, and the gritty action within these pages. And you should. It is such an amazing part of the novel. However, I would love for people to seek out those instances where things take a breath and we can get to know Taj as well as the others around him.
This book is an unforgettable read. Every single piece of the story that courses through the pages of this book make it worth reading. The magic, the lore, and the vibrant descriptions of this world are just the beginning of what BEASTS MADE OF NIGHT has to offer its readers.

In the walled city of Kos, corrupt mages can magically call forth sin from a sinner in the form of sin-beasts – lethal creatures spawned from feelings of guilt.
Taj is the most talented of the aki, young sin-eaters indentured by the mages to slay the sin-beasts. But Taj’s livelihood comes at a terrible cost. When he kills a sin-beast, a tattoo of the beast appears on his skin while the guilt of committing the sin appears on his mind. Most aki are driven mad by the process, but 17-year-old Taj is cocky and desperate to provide for his family.
When Taj is called to eat a sin of a royal, he’s suddenly thrust into the center of a dark conspiracy to destroy Kos. Now Taj must fight to save the princess that he loves – and his own life.
A gritty Nigerian-influenced fantasy.
