My Highly Caffeinated Thought: The perfect ending to a haunting and intricate series chronicling Frieda's journey with serial killer Dean Reeve.
DAY OF THE DEAD is the final book in the Frieda Klein series. This is a bitter sweet review for me, because over the course of eight books, I have gotten to know Frieda. Her life has played out in the pages of the authors' books complete with many ups, downs, twists, and turns.
In many ways, this story was exactly what I was looking for. It gave closure where it was needed, brought back the characters I love, and still left an opening at the end for what is to come. Frieda's quest to end the dark game Dean Reeve has dragged her into will be over by the end of the book.
I will not tell you who survives or what lies ahead for all of the people we have met over the series. What I will say is that there is a surprise at the conclusion I didn't see coming and there are several points in the story where I thought they would have zigged when they zagged.
Nicci French delivered a solid, smart, and compelling ending to this series. If you are like me, you will no doubt be happy with it, but still sad to see it all come to a close. So now I guess I have to find a new series to obsess about.
Reviewer Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Now the final book in this extraordinary series is here. And it's an ending you'll never forget.
A decade ago, psychologist Frieda Klein was sucked into the orbit of Dean Reeve -- a killer able to impersonate almost anyone, a man who can disappear without a trace, a psychopath obsessed with Frieda herself.
In the years since, Frieda has worked with -- and sometimes against -- the London police in solving their most baffling cases. But now she's in hiding, driven to isolation by Reeve. When a series of murders announces his return, Frieda must emerge from the shadows to confront her nemesis. And it's a showdown she might not survive.
This gripping cat-and-mouse thriller pits one of the most fascinating characters in contemporary fiction against an enemy like none other. Smart, sophisticated, and spellbinding, it's a novel to leave you breathless.
