Book Review for THE BOURBON KINGS by J. R. Ward
THE BOURBON KINGS by J. R. Ward
The Bourbon Kings Series, Book 1

My Highly Caffeinated Thought:The Bourbon Kings is an enthralling family saga packed with scandal and edge of your seat drama. It will open the doors to a sinfully addictive world of love, lies, greed, secrets, and Bourbon.
In the first book in the Bourbon Kings series, you are thrown into the Bradford family dysfunctional drama as Tulane makes his way back to his family estate, Easterly, after a two year absence. With a wife that is just as conniving as any villain you could see on the big screen, a sister that has a way of getting into trouble, a brother that is dealing with his own tragic past, and a father that is as devious as he is despicable, Tulane has his hands full. However, there is a bright side to all the crazy and that is Lizzie King. For all intents and purposes, she is the love of his life and the one that got away.
Throughout the pages of the book, family discord will reach new levels as Tulane tries to sort through the mess that his father has created. However, it becomes difficult for him to keep his head above water when bodies keep showing up, accusations are made against him, and the business that his family has made their name on seems to be falling apart. If you think that this is complicated, then just read the book because there is more going on than even I can tell you.
Many times while reading this book, I couldn’t help but flash back to great TV shows such as Dallas or Dynasty. Just as those shows pulled in the viewers because of all the antics, the drama, the characters, and the wickedly devious behavior in J.R. Ward’s story will captivate the reader just as much. The way that the story unfolds is so seamlessly done, that you will bounce around from family member to family member waiting to see what will happen next.
In truth, The Bourbon Kings is more than just a book. It is an epic tale of privilege and scandal that jumps off the page. As you read it, there isn’t one of the 420 pages that isn’t riveting, sexy, or gasp worthy.
So what are you waiting for? Straight up or neat, this is the book that will become your newest sinfully fabulous addiction. Then all you (and I) have to do is wait for The Angel’s Share to be released in 2016. I can only hope that we might even have a third book in the series… Can anyone say The Devil’s Cut?

For those of you who don’t know much about Bourbon...
Bourbon, by law, must be aged in barrels for at the very least, two years. As the bourbon is in the barrels, there is evaporation. This is called the Angel’s Share because it is basically the part of the Bourbon that goes up to the heavens to share with the angels. In addition, as the Bourbon ages, some of it soaks into the barrels (or cask). The Bourbon Whiskey extracted from the wood is called the Devil’s Cut. This has a much more robust and heftier flavor. And there you have it…a little Bourbon education.
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood delivers the first novel in an enthralling new series set amid the shifting dynamics of a Southern family defined by wealth and privilege—and compromised by secrets, deceit, and scandal....
For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege—as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.
For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted—and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right. Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.
As family tensions—professional and intimately private—ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.
