My Highly Caffeinated Thought: Motivation with candor, a bit of humor, and attainable goals.
GIRL, STOP APOLOGIZING challenges all women to stop being sorry for who we are and what we want. In her uniquely Rach way of empowering women, Hollis calls for her readers to take a long hard look at their lives at whatever stage they are in and see if they are indeed present in their own lives.
Truth be told. GIRL, WASH YOUR FACE was a game changer for me. I read it at the exact time in my life I needed it. Hollis opened my mind and woke me up. In GIRL, STOP APOLOGIZING, she continued to push me in the same direction. By shedding light on the fact that we don’t need to be defined by those around us, I was able to have a few ah-ha moments. I am enough. I can be who I am without apology. I am capable of making my dreams reality.
The way she broke down the book into three main sections allows the reader to develop a doable plan. I am the queen of excuses, so let go of some of my go-to reasons why was a big one for me. Then, I was able to think about the behaviors I should adopt and skills to learn. I especially like how to create a habit out of something good. Last year, I took part in the Last 90 Days with Rachel and her husband, Dave. I not only broke several bad eating habits; I started a few positive ones. I am proud to say that I still am not having wine on Mondays nor am I eating peanut butter by the spoonfuls. On the positive side, I now workout an extra burst of cardio every other day in addition to my two half-hour walks every day with my dog, Lizzy. On the business side of my life, I have made real progress on my art book project and have started to create a plan for my next year’s worth of work. Honestly, nothing seems too much if I concentrate on one thing at a time.
Sorry. Not Sorry. I love Rachel Hollis. Her brand of self-help motivational fire and inspiration works for me. Were there moments in this book where I didn’t get as much out of it as in other places? Sure. However, not every person is in the same stage of their life, so it is only natural that some chapters would resonate more with me than others. I can say that this book, just as the previous one, gives women tools to start making changes in their lives.
So what are you waiting for? Let’s start today off right.
Audiobook Note: If you are the type of person that needs hear something for it to stick, check out Hollis’ audiobooks. I have physical copies and audio of both of her self-help books. This is because some days I need to see the advice in front of me, but there are many times when I need to hear it. Also, if you aren’t able to get to the conferences, conventions, or events for whatever reason, these audiobooks are great. It is that extra dose of motivation to hear the words come from the author.
“I believe we can change the world. But first, we’ve got to stop living in fear of being judged for who we are.”
Rachel Hollis has seen it too often: women not living into their full potential. They feel a tugging on their hearts for something more, but they’re afraid of embarrassment, of falling short of perfection, of not being enough.
In Girl, Stop Apologizing, #1 New York Times bestselling author and founder of a multimillion-dollar media company, Rachel Hollis sounds a wake-up call. She knows that many women have been taught to define themselves in light of other people—whether as wife, mother, daughter, or employee—instead of learning how to own who they are and what they want. With a challenge to women everywhere to stop talking themselves out of their dreams, Hollis identifies the excuses to let go of, the behaviors to adopt, and the skills to acquire on the path to growth, confidence, and believing in yourself.
