My Highly Caffeinated Thought: A darkly tense novel with complicated relationships tied to cultural beliefs.
THE DROWNED GIRL hits all the crime novel boxes. Once again, Blaedel proves she can give her readers a gritty, twisted mystery as well as making it thought provoking. It is something I have always loved about the author. She never shies away from difficult or timely subject matter, but still manages to make the suspense and crime novel of it all compelling.
Here is the thing. As I continue to read the books which came before my first Louise Rick novel (THE KILLING FOREST), I am becoming even more invested in the characters as well as the author. Blaedel has a unique ability to capture the darkness of human nature and the atrocities which occur in our world while still giving her reader a sliver of hope for change.
This book and all the others centering around Detective Louise Rick are top notch crime novels. They pull you in with the murders and mayhem, but it is nuances of the investigation coupled with the personal touches brought by the characters which make them worth reading.
Reviewer Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
It's clearly no ordinary drowning. When a young girl is pulled from the watery depths, a piece of concrete tied around her waist and two mysterious circular patches on the back of her neck, Detective Louise Rick is immediately called out to Holbaek Fjord.
Her name was Samra, and when the police learn that she was a member of Holbaek's sizeable Muslim immigrant community, they immediately assume it was an honor killing. Yet her mother insists Samra had done nothing dishonorable. Louise must navigate the complex web of family and community ties in the small town's tightly knit Muslim community as she hunts a killer . . . before he strikes again.
Thriller master Sara Blaedel is in top form as Louise takes on what may be her most important-and most deadly-case yet.
