Book Review for THE FAVORITE DAUGHTER by Kaira Rouda
THE FAVORITE DAUGHTER by Kaira Rouda

My Highly Caffeinated Thought: An addictively dark and hair-raising read that brings you into the mind of a woman you will love to hate.
Holy crap! This book. Where do I even start? THE FAVORITE DAUGHTER is a positively bingeable psychological thriller. Rouda manages to give us a narrator so disturbingly charming she will send chills down your spine while still managing to garner some sympathy.
From the first page, I was pulled into the world the author created. It is centered around a narrator who takes manipulation to a whole new level. What I love is how Rouda develops and expands on who Jane Harris is. There are so many layers to this character that the reader will not know which direction she will go in. The narcissism Jane exudes is unparalleled. Even her desire to maneuver those around her like pieces in a game is self-serving. Yet, she is wickedly endearing at times.
In this smart, seductive, and wonderfully twisted book, Kaira Rouda gave her reader’s a gift. This is the type of novel you start and have a tough time putting down. Every page was irresistibly creepy. I never wanted it to end!

The perfect home. The perfect family. The perfect lie.
Jane Harris lives in a sparkling home in an oceanfront gated community in Orange County. It’s a place that seems too beautiful to be touched by sadness. But exactly one year ago, Jane’s oldest daughter, Mary, died in a tragic accident and Jane has been grief-stricken ever since. Lost in a haze of anti-depressants, she’s barely even left the house. Now that’s all about to change.
It’s time for Jane to reclaim her life and her family. Jane’s husband, David, has planned a memorial service for Mary and three days later, their youngest daughter, Betsy, graduates high school. Yet as Jane reemerges into the world, it’s clear her family has changed without her. Her husband has been working long days—and nights—at the office. Her daughter seems distant, even secretive. And her beloved Mary was always such a good girl—dutiful and loving. But does someone know more about Mary, and about her last day, than they’ve revealed?
The bonds between mothers and daughters, and husbands and wives should never be broken. But you never know how far someone will go to keep a family together…
