My Highly Caffeinated Thought: A dark, multi-layered suspense novel filled with mental instability, darkness, and a truly chilling crime.
THE HYPNOTIST is a tense, gritty, and at times sinister crime novel. I instantly became engrossed in the world the authors created because of the reality to the story as well as the deeply flawed characters I met. It is a combination of the style writing and the way the investigation begins to come together which keeps the reader at the edge of their seat.
Here is what I loved about the book. First of all, the writing is spectacular. The flow and the incorporation of all the elements of crimes just made me want to find out what happened next. I will not lie, there were a few moments I didn’t need, but 90% of this book propelled the investigation forward and added to the fabulously suspenseful nature of the crime. The second thing which I liked was that there was no feeling of a set-up to a forthcoming series. What I mean is normally at the beginning of the series, the reader gets a good deal of introduction to the cast as well as the setting of the series. Though this is good to an extent, some authors concentrate too much on this for me. With Lars Kepler, they jump right into it. Sure we meet people and are introduced to certain relationships, but this book is about the crime and Joona Linna’s investigation. I loved that!
I will be honest, I have been putting off reading this series. Thought I have heard such great things, I just wasn’t sure if I had it in me to read another crime novel series. However, with the fifth book coming out in February, I decided to jump in. Boy am I glad that I did. I am already onto the second book and loving every minute of it.

A vibrant new translation of the first installment in the #1 internationally bestselling Joona Linna series, The Hypnotist shows the lengths one determined detective is willing to go to solve a horrific crime.
A gruesome triple homicide attracts the interest of Detective Inspector Joona Linna, who demands to investigate the murders. There's only one surviving witness--the boy whose family was killed before his eyes. The boy was supposed to to be the fourth victim, but somehow he survived. He's suffered more than one hundred knife wounds and lapsed into a catatonic state. Desperate for information, Linna enlists Dr. Erik Maria Bark to hypnotize the boy, hoping to uncover the killer through his memories.
Bark has sworn he would never do this kind of work again because of the long-term effects it can have on a patient's psyche. But Linna won't relent, and the doctor breaks his promise. When he hypnotizes the victim, a long and terrifying chain of events comes to light. This sensational thriller will have you mesmerized from its very first page.
