My Highly Caffeinated Thought: A gripping, relevant, and edge of your seat story bringing the best and worst of human nature to light.

In the ninth book of the Will Trent series, THE LAST WIDOW, we are thrust right into a story which sadly could be ripped from the headlines. Slaughter’s timely tale of duplicity, hate, and corrupted ideological values will not only keep you entertained, but it will also make you think.

** Book Review for THE LAST WIDOW by Karin Slaughter **

Here is the thing. I am a huge fan of Slaughter’s books and especially the Will Trent series. I have read them all, and in my humble option, they keep getting better. The more I revisit this world, the more I find out about the characters. And honestly, no matter how much I love the investigations and the intense suspense brought on by heightened situations, it is the characters that keep pulling me back. The author manages to develop them in a way which seems natural to each of their evolution without being too slow or rushed.

I believe it needs to be said that this book shines a light on hate. In the current climate we are in as a society, it touches upon so much of what people are facing today—the prejudice, the violence, and disparaging speech. The author uses her villains to show the worst of human nature. The disturbing way the leader justifies everything is crazy to me, but I know some thrive on this type of loathing of certain people. On the flip side, I am happy to say that there wasn’t just the worst behavior shown. There are moments of hope, and those who will fight back. What I can say is that Slaughter doesn’t exploit this issue to prop up her narrative. She uses it as a tool to ground the story in reality. She allows the reader to see the whole picture to understand the motives of all involved.

THE LAST WIDOW is alarming, scarily realistic, and will keep flipping the pages to see how this story will end. The twists and turns Sara, Trent, the FBI, and the GBI will encounter only make this suspenseful thriller even better. All I can say is that I cannot wait for book ten.
