My Highly Caffeinated Thought: A masterful retelling with grit, intrigue, and suspense.

Before I get into discussing the amazing MACBETH by Jo Nesbø, I have to talk a little bit about the Hogarth Shakespeare series. This collection continues to amaze me with the quality of the writing that some of our best authors are bringing to the table. There isn't one retelling that I haven't been thoroughly captivated by. These books breathe new life into the tales that I have read many times over.

Now let's talk about MACBETH by Jo Nesbø. The author has taken this classic macabre tale and turned it into something that I am still obsessing about. By reimagining the story as a nordic police procedural, the reader get what I like to call "classic Nesbø". The story has it all. It is dark. It has those deeply flawed characters we all want to know more about. It exposes the grimy underbelly of corruption. And...it is jam packed with lies and deceit. What is not to like?

From the beginning, I was hooked. The way that the author made this story his own allowed me to read the book with fresh eyes. I have loved Shakespeare's MACBETH since the first time I read it over twenty years ago. Needless to say, I know the story well. Yet, as I was savoring every page, I found myself getting lost in Nesbø's story waiting to see what would happen next. This is what I crave for when I read a book based on one of my favorites. I want the author to write something completely unique to the original, but still maintaining the essence of what I enjoyed so much in the first place.

In my opinion, MACBETH by Jo Nesbø is one of the best things that I have read by the author. I know...I know...What about Harry Hole? Those books will always be amazing, but for right now, I am just in awe by this book. Readers who love classics retold, suspense novels, crime novels, and stories with complicated characters will no doubt enjoy this book as much as I did. I consider it a must read for 2018.

Synopsis

A HEART-POUNDING NEW THRILLER FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SNOWMAN AND THE THIRST

Set in the 1970s in a run-down, rainy industrial town, Jo Nesbo's Macbeth centers around a police force struggling to shed an incessant drug problem. Duncan, chief of police, is idealistic and visionary, a dream to the townspeople but a nightmare for criminals. The drug trade is ruled by two drug lords, one of whom—a master of manipulation named Hecate—has connections with the highest in power, and plans to use them to get his way.

Hecate’s plot hinges on steadily, insidiously manipulating Inspector Macbeth: the head of SWAT and a man already susceptible to violent and paranoid tendencies. What follows is an unputdownable story of love and guilt, political ambition, and greed for more, exploring the darkest corners of human nature, and the aspirations of the criminal mind.
